Bhattacharjee, Dalia

Dr. Dalia Bhattacharjee received her BA in Political Science from Cotton College, Guwahati, followed by MA in Development Studies from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati. She then earned her PhD from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Mohali. Her doctoral research is an ethnographic inquiry into the lives of the women who work as surrogate mothers in the commercial surrogacy industry in India.Dalia received the Emerging Scholar Award from the prestigious journal Gender, Place and Culture in 2019. Dalia is a recipient of the Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Fellowship (2021-2023), at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Dept. Geography). Dalia is currently working on her first book (University of West Virginia Press).

Her doctoral research is an ethnographic inquiry into the lives of the women who work as surrogate mothers in the commercial surrogacy industry in India. Inspired by works in feminist theory, Dalia’s research focuses on the everyday world of the reproductive laborers and the centrality of women’s embodiment. Her present research engages with geographies of emotions, embodiment, and affect, along with the burgeoning literature in the field of feminist science and technology studies in order to understand the impact of reproductive technologies on women, both physically and emotionally
